My first encounter of The Simpsons was in the very early 90’s around my cousins house. They had a magical contraption called Sky that I would not have for another 10+ years you see! I was only 5 or 6 years old, but remember howling at Homer doing the slapstick double decent into Springfield Gorge from the “Bart The Daredevil’ episode. It took another half dozen years to get to see it all again on BBC2 and another fair chunk until the Series 8 episode “You Only Move Twice” popped up on terrestrial TV.
Throughout the past week i’ve been trying to think of another single episode of a TV show i’ve watched more (on purpose) and nothing sprang to mind… An incredibly fun 20 odd minutes with a spy film parody weaving in and out. The Albert Brooks voiced (and Blofeld x Richard Branson styled) Scorpio being a perennial favourite of fans and critics ever since. Many fans pinpoint this time around Season 8 and 9 as both the pinnacle and start of the decline and (although i’ve only ever been a casual observer and pretty much a non existent viewer from around 2008+) i’m likely to agree with them.
“Scorpio! He’ll sting you with his dreams of power and wealth. Beware of Scorpio! His twisted twin obsessions are his plot to rule the world, and his employees’ health. He’ll welcome you into his lair, like the nobleman welcomes his guest. With free dental care and a stock plan that helps you invest! *insert But beware of his generous pensions, plus three weeks paid vacation each year. And on Fridays the lunchroom serves hot dogs and burgers and beer! He loves German beer!”
